Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is a basic concept for most businesses. But, understanding and execution are not one and the same. Help Google help you by organizing your website’s content using the 8 steps outlined in this 2 part series.

Step 1: Generate a list of short-tail keywords

Develop a list of 10 words that sum up your company’s product or service, these will be called our pillar topics. UseGoogle’s Keyword Toolto find their search volume and brainstorm related words that are also relevant to your business. You now have a measuring stick for narrowing down the 10-15 short-tail keywords. These pillar topics are a primary support for a larger list of long-tail keywords, which is what brings us to our next step.

Step 2: Make a List of Long-Tail Keywords Based on These Topics

We use long-tail keywords to develop subtopics. Then use those subtopics to come up with blog posts or web page ideas, and as you know blogging is part of a solidinbound marketing strategy. Using the short-tail keyword list you developed in step 1, enter it into Google’s Keyword Tool and to identify the long-tail keywords you’re going to use for your blog posts! Together, all these subtopics will start to form what is known as a cluster, and modern-day search engines depend on clusters to connect your content to the right audience.

For more info on how this work, see this short vid:

Step 3: Build Pages for Each Topic

With the 10 pillar topics, you can now make a web page for each topic. You’ll want to now outline the topics at a high level on each one of those pages using the subtopics you made in step 2. Each page you make also needs to include lots of relevant content to your audience, and unique pictures, designs, and links to other content on your site which makes for a good user experience.

Step 4: Set Up a Blog

In our previousblog post, we explained why blogging is important to help rank your site on search engines. Each blog post acts as a “web page” for search engines to potentially rank (So if you haven’t started doing it, get on it!!). The blog is where you’re going to want to go into detail on each of the subtopics you made in step 2.

This was part 1 of a series that will help you develop a strategy for your business which will get you ranked on Google, and develop a strategy for inbound marketing. If you need further help, send us a message… or wait for part 2! 😉
